Program Notes
The concept for this piece was conceived during a recent interview I gave for a podcast. I was discussing the idea of transgression as it related to my music, during which I relayed my belief in the subjectivity of transgression. This is based on my understand of transgression as existing in contrast to morality. However, two different people can have vastly different ideas of what is moral or immoral. The logical conclusion from this observation is that morality is a subjective concept, and therefore the idea of transgression is also subjective. These ideas became the conceptual basis for this composition.
The musical ideas also drew on the idea of transgression. All of the samples in the electronics part are derived from songs by the Dead Kennedys, an American punk rock band whose penchant for transgression and provocation made them a notable and controversial band. The drum set writing, which borrows heavily from rock techniques, is designed to complement the nature of the samples.
