Program Notes

When I was in the local all-regional band in high school, we played an arrangement of songs from the movie Mary Poppins. The piece opens with this beautiful rendition of the “Feed the Birds” chorus in the horn section. It was the best moment of a high-quality band chart, and the memory of hearing it for the first time stayed with me. When I was asked to write a solo horn composition, my mind immediately went to this moment. I built the piece around it.

This piece represents a new approach in applying Post-Internet principles to non-electronic music. I took the melody of the song “Feed the Birds” and applied various processes to it that obfuscated and transformed the melodic line into something entirely new. This process is similar to those in my electroacoustic works, but successfully conveyed in an exclusively acoustic setting.
